Rui is a highly regarded leader in the hospitality industry, bringing over 30 years of expertise in managing iconic luxury properties across the Americas, Europe, and Polynesia.

As Belmond’s Divisional Managing Director for North, Central America and the Caribbean, Rui has overseen unique properties such as 'Cap Juluca', 'La Samanna', 'El Encanto', and 'Maroma', consistently blending operational excellence with a deep commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

Before joining Belmond, Rui held senior operational roles at Starwood Hotels, where he demonstrated his exceptional skill in luxury property management and brand evolution through leading the openings of 'The St. Regis Istanbul' and 'The St. Regis Mexico City', and in the launch of 'The St. Regis Bora Bora' and management of of the iconic 'Bora Bora Nui', elevating the region’s status as a world-class luxury destination. In Mexico’s Costalegre region, he led the transformation of 'El Careyes' and 'El Tamarindo' positioning them as top-tier global destinations.

Throughout his career, Rui has prioritized positioning luxury resorts as leaders in environmental stewardship and contributors to their local communities. His visionary leadership has driven initiatives to minimize environmental footprints, promote flexitarian dining to reduce reliance on animal-based foods, incorporate local cultural heritage into guest experiences, and foster sustainable practices within hotel operations. Rui has set a new standard for ethical balance, proving that responsible luxury and sustainability can coexist.

Rui holds a Certificate in 'Hotel Real Estate Investments and Asset Management' from Cornell University and is a graduate of 'Escola de Hotelaria e Turismo do Porto'.
